About

Hi, I’m Kate Walker. I write books for children. I enjoy writing everything from short stories, picture books and chapter books through to novels for children aged seven to twelve. There’s a lot to learn about each age group and genre and it can be a bit overwhelming to figure it all out alone. I was fortunate to be mentored by author Amy Sparkes, but I have received critiques, support and guidance from a number of authors along the way to publication. I am represented by Charlotte Colwill at Colwill and Peddle and a member of the Society of Authors. I have won and been listed in many competitions. Discover more here

Since I started writing over ten years ago I have read a large volume of children’s books. I have critiqued work and beta read for many authors. I can help you to untangle problems with your manuscript and offer support with the editing process. Please get in touch to see how I can help you. From voice, structure or just to discuss concept and plot beats I can help you to work out how to strengthen your story.

‘I tried a few different critique services and found Kate’s the best. Kate has a talent for telling you the things you need to hear (even if a little painful) in the kindest, most supportive way. It was this honesty and integrity that really stood out to me. Kate has critiqued a number of picture books for me, including re-drafts, and it’s been clear that she’s really immersed herself in each story in order to give the best advice. I really feel Kate has helped develop me as a writer and helped me navigate the challenges of building a submission package as a new writer. ‘
